In sci-fi, if you don’t have a blaster weapon you’re a nobody. So, if you need a laser or phaser to complete your latest cool cosplay, you’ve come to right place. Our guide will help you find the ideal laster pistol or rifle, including some great 3D-printed designs. Cosplay laser weapons can be bought as toys and modified, 3D printed or crafted in foam. Laser weapons are MUCH less likely to cause any issues than ‘traditional weapons’ with con entry or in public (though care should still be taken).
If you plan to take any weapons and props to an event, be sure to check the organiser’s rules first to make sure they’re allowed. To help you on your way, we’ve created a handy guide on the subject here.

Laser pistols and phasers for cosplay

Laser pistols for your cosplay are widely available to buy ready-made or you can 3D-print them. Our round-up brings you several great options, including first-hand recommendations from cosplayers sporting weapons at MCM Comic Cons. @theclonemandalorian: How I created my Mando blaster

How I created my Mando blaster
@theclonemandalorian’s blaster is super-realistic. MCM London Comic Con October 2021. ©lezanophoto/worldofcosplay

My blaster is actually a modified Nerf rifle. It was very simple to make, mostly just a repaint, but I did add a different scope and a few little random plastic bits to kitbash (using parts from other kits) some detail onto it! Then I started painting. It’s very similar to miniature painting, but on a larger scale. Using miniature weathering paints is super-helpful to get the metallic effect, and then I painted the blaster’s barrel blue and white to match my armour, so that it was more bespoke to my Mando!

Buying laser guns & phasers on etsy.com

Buying laser guns & phasers on etsy.com
You’ll find all types of weapons on etsy.com, which are handmade/3D printed and painted by real cosplay artisans. If the weapon you want isn’t available, many of the creators will take commissions. For con access, 3D printing in plastics materials is a better bet than buying steel weapons which may be barred from entry to events on safety grounds. Simply log on to etsy.com and search the weapon you’re after. ©etsy.com

Cosplay weapons and the law

Stay on the right side of the law by always keeping cosplay weapons concealed when in public, and when you’re not in a con or cosplay environment. You can infringe all sorts of very serious laws by brandishing look-alike weapons in public spaces.
Flying with weapons in your hand luggage is illegal, and is highly likely to cause serious problems and delays, even if they’re fake, toys or deactivated. Check with your airline before flying and put any props in checked luggage.

See our cosplay weapons overview to read our guide to the laws and rules around costume weaponry.

Have you had legal problems with cosplay weapons?

If you have ever had any issues with cosplay weapons and the law (anywhere in the world), we’d like to hear from you, so that we can share your story (anonymously if necessary) to help other cosplayers.
